About the event

On February 2, 2023, the Boxser Diversity Initiative (BDI) hosted a screening of the award-winning documentary Traces of the Trade: A Story From The Deep North at the Mildred Sainer Pavilion, New College of Florida. This powerful film follows filmmaker Katrina Browne and nine of her cousins as they uncover the dark legacy of their New England family, which was the largest slave-trading family in US history.

The event began with a reception at 5:30 PM, followed by the film screening from 6:30 to 9:30 PM, which was accompanied by a community conversation on race, reconciliation, and healing. The discussion was facilitated by Dain Perry, one of the nine cousins featured in the documentary, and his wife Constance. Together, they led a thoughtful dialogue exploring the enduring impact of slavery on the United States and its ongoing social ramifications.

The screening provided attendees a meaningful opportunity to engage with this difficult but essential history, encouraging reflection and community healing. For more information about the film, participants were encouraged to visit TracesOfTheTrade.org.
