Published by Suncoast Searchlight

Bending The Arc Scholar Sophia Haakman was recently featured in Suncoast Searchlight. Sophia has been involved with Sarasota Bay Watch, where her interest in birdwatching has grown into research on local bird populations and habitat restoration. Her story highlights the work she’s doing to support wildlife conservation in our community.
Sophia developed a bird-monitoring project through her volunteer work with Sarasota Bay Watch. Her research examined the effects of habitat restoration on local bird populations, finding that more bird species thrived in restored areas than in areas that had not been restored. Her work will also be featured in Birding, the American Birding Association’s national magazine. She also helped establish a local chapter of the Florida Young Birders Club, creating more opportunities for young people in the Sarasota and Manatee area to connect through birdwatching.
