About the event

On March 30, 2023, the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), in partnership with the Sarasota and Manatee Community Remembrance Project (Manasota Remembers), hosted the Racial Justice Essay Contest Awards Celebration. This event recognized local high school students who participated in a contest to write 800- to 1000-word essays examining the history of racial injustice, analyzing how such injustices persist today, and envisioning solutions for a future free from racial inequality.

The celebration honored the thoughtful and impactful work of the essay contest participants. Winning students were awarded scholarships of up to $5,000 by EJI. Additionally, the Sarasota and Manatee Community Remembrance Project provided winners with a trip to Montgomery, Alabama, to visit the EJI museum and memorial, deepening their understanding of the Civil Rights Movement and the ongoing struggle for racial justice.

This event highlighted the importance of educating youth about racial history and justice, while encouraging active engagement in creating a more equitable future.
