About the event

On January 23, 2025, the Boxser Diversity Initiative (BDI) hosted a compelling panel discussion titled Power and the People: Social Justice in America Since the Civil Rights Movement. The event, moderated by Dr. Timothy Patrick McCarthy, provided historical context on how the civil rights movement served as a pivotal moment in US history and inspired later social justice movements, including Latino rights, LGBTQ+ advocacy, and disability justice.

Following Dr. McCarthy’s overview, local leaders CJ Czaia, Zander Moricz, and Kehsi Iman Wilson joined the conversation to share their experiences and insights. Together, they explored how their work builds upon the legacy of nonviolent protest, legal challenges, and grassroots organizing established during the civil rights era, while also addressing the contemporary challenges faced by their communities.

The event was free and open to the public, with limited seating requiring reservations. Funding was provided by the Zella I. and Junius F. Allen Fund and the Frederick Gallo Fund of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.
