About the event

On January 9, 2025, the Boxser Diversity Initiative (BDI) hosted a special event featuring historian Dr. Raymond Arsenault, who presented John Lewis: In Search of the Beloved Community. The program explored the extraordinary six-decade legacy of John Lewis, a towering figure in the U.S. civil rights movement known for his unwavering integrity, courage, and dedication to “good trouble.”

Dr. Arsenault traced Lewis’s upbringing in rural Alabama, his passionate advocacy for voting rights and anti-poverty efforts, and his long tenure in Congress as the nation’s “conscience.” The presentation highlighted Lewis’s lifelong commitment to creating the “beloved community,” a vision of society grounded in equity and inclusion.

The event was free and open to the public, with limited seating requiring reservations. Funding was graciously provided by the Zella I. and Junius F. Allen Fund and the Frederick Gallo Fund of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.
