About the event

On February 13, 2025, the Boxser Diversity Initiative (BDI) presented an insightful evening featuring acclaimed author Gilbert King in conversation with Judge Charles E. Williams. The event delved into the powerful intersection of legal history and social justice, focusing on King’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book Devil in the Grove and his latest work, Beneath a Ruthless Sun.

King and Judge Williams explored the chilling legacy of Sheriff Willis McCall, a central figure in both books, and examined the lived experiences of African Americans in Florida during the Jim Crow era. Attendees gained a deeper understanding of how race relations, law, politics, and economics shaped the lives of the individuals profiled in King’s compelling narratives.

Gilbert King also shared insights into his investigative nonfiction writing process, highlighting how his storytelling transcends the specific crimes to reflect on broader issues within the American criminal justice system and society.

This free, public event had limited seating requiring reservations. Funding was generously provided by the Zella I. and Junius F. Allen Fund and the Frederick Gallo Fund of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.
